Digging further into vector game speed, I'm not sure how to get them running at the right speed without the audio distortion due to the weird refresh rates many vector games used.  My best idea at the moment (short of finding the magic MAME setting that fixes it) is to add a 50hz interlaced mode (which should be an improvement but wont be perfect for Star Wars either).

Turns out 274 doesn't save all changes.  Messing with the sliders, contrast saves, beam width doesn't... no idea why.  It's possible some settings get overrided by some other settings, not sure at the moment.  Maybe MAME only saves some of the slider settings(?)... not sure why that would be the case either.

Also, I need to add some monitor rotation handling for the vector games.

That didnt work. However, I tried moving Star Trek to 172 using correct ROM and what I noticed is when you push TAB and select ABOUT MAME at the very top of menu it says something about MAME 0.269. It is the same for 274, say 269 when selecting ABOUT MAME. Did not check 251 and totally different menu for 279 ROMs. Star Wars seems OK and very playable in 274 with speed and voices not being too fast.

I need to look into the about MAME version thing.  No idea whats going on there, I'll look into it in the next few days.

I can duplicate the vector render mod in the 274 launcher to another MAME if any particular games are better elsewhere.
