I''ll have too take a look, very likely it's a missing or wrong comand line toggle in the launcher script, likely throttle.  I breifly had star wars running yesterday (didn't play it) and didn't notice, may have been in 251 or somehting though.

Can confirm, Star Wars seems quick in 279, seems OK in 274 though.  The same roms will work in either MAME version so the easiest solution is probably just to stick those games into 274.

I'll have a look at the launcher and config files and see if I can spot the difference.  Will update if/when I figure it out.  EDIT: I can't figure out what the difference is, use 274 for now.

that helped, still ever so slightly too fast but nowhere near as bad as .279 was

Next question, how do you get artwork to show up? Ive got the zip files in the boot/previews/artwork folder but its not showing up in games. I looked a few places but couldnt really find what to do.

Not sure offhand I'll take a look at it tomorrow.  What artwork is it in particular?  May as well make sure I'm looking at the same thing.  I know there's a few things supported by MAME but I haven't looked at them for years.  If you're feeling adventurous it may be a setting in /home/pi/.mame274/mame.ini that needs toggling.

a few off hand are gorf, asteroids, asteroids deluxe, and discs of tron. DOT and Asteroids/Asteroids deluxe have background artwork to help with the authenticity. mainly using .279 and now .274 for a couple.

this is mame.ini for .279

artpath                   $HOME/mame/artwork;/usr/local/share/games/mame/artwork;/usr/share/games/mame/artwork;/boot/previews/artwork

I thought I'd posted this earlier but try changing:
/boot/previews/artwork
to
/boot/firmware/previews/mameArtwork

That's what you posted yesterday, it did not work.  I'll double check later as I'm not at cab.

Sorry, my original post disapeared... didn't think you'd seen it.

I'll take another look and update later.

Do you have the current version of the art files?  They were changed after 106 to use a different format.

EDIT: with the path corrected in mame.ini and the current version of the art files there should be artwork displayed and artwork options available from the mame video options while game is running.  Art files form AdvMAME or older won't work on current MAME versions.

I added this to the .274 and .279 cfg files in the .attract folder:

artwork      artwork         /boot/firmware/previews/mameArtwork

added this to the 274/279 mame.ini

artpath                   artwork;/boot/firmware/previews/mameArtwork

Testing now at 8pmCST, will report back

You don't need the MAME artwork files referenced from Attract-Mode, that's just for the wheel art etc. you want visible in the game select menu.

Just to be certain, your artwork files are in zip format and have both .png(s) and a .lay (prob default.lay) file in them?

EDIT: current artwork: https://archive.org/details/artwork_202505

Your link is where I got the artwork files from. Have as a bookmark for awhile now but all is good. Seeing the artwork now. Apparently I kept missing a misspelled word. Im just gonna leave the AM edit, doesnt seem to hurt anything.

Do you happen to have a list of artwork that improves games with backdrops and colour overlays?  The artwork adds so much to certain games but I don't want to dump in a bunch of not useful on CRT borders and marquees...

Video Pinball is practically unusable without art, Spacies (all versions) and Asteroids (& deluxe) look way better (on horizontal monitors) with the backdrop art on.  I don't know what else works well.

Discs of Tron.
Gorf (on a horizontal monitor with the artwork adds the badge ranks on the lower right. Yes, I know its a vertical game but on a 25" monitor it works.)
Battlezone.
Star Trek
Space Invaders
Boot Hill
Frogs
warrior (must have backdrop, shows the pits)

I haven't found a need for others yet and Ive got about 600 H & V games (1 H cab and 1 V cab)
