When I modify a game to run from a different emulator via Attract-Mode using the "E" button... does that change make the change to the ROMlist file associated with that display or does it store that change somewhere else?

I assume it's the prior.  Am I correct in my assumption?

Yes, you are correct.

The 'e' edit menu only make changes to the active romlist.  It doesn't change the rom folders/locations etc. or other romlists, eg. 'delete this game' option doesn't delete the rom itself only removes it from the list.  As changes are only made to the romlist and nowhere else rescanning the roms will cause you to lose any changes made to the list in this way.

So would you say that it would be best practice to make permanent changes to your romlists directly via Notepad++ when you determine that a specific emulator isn't working right and you try another to find it works better?

The result would be much the same either way, direct editing the list in text editor or doing it with the 'e' menu in Attract-Mode.

For a permanent change you need to move the rom to the right MAMEs romfolder.
