Has anyone had any luck getting nba jam TE 2.0 working?  its the best version because it has a bunch of hidden chars including the mortal kombat roster and backboard breaking.
All of that was removed in newer versions.
ive tried pretty much all of the mame versions.   Adding the game to the aml files to try but no luck it just bounces back to the attract screen.

Are you leaving the parent rom nbajamte.zip in the rom folder too?  If not nbejamte2a.zip will need the parent rom.

both roms will need to match the MAME version.  I'd recommend MAME 0.279, it's fullspeed from a quick look at it.

Having had a quick look, mameinfo.txt also doesn't have nbajamte2a (it has nbajamte2), it will most likely run in the wrong res without updating mameinfo.txt

Here's modified mameinfo and aml files for 279: https://mega.nz/file/st9lTRyZ#xVZtFV2ZAeXy1eTbpycRKB856AUiG27H4XPdfJv9vJI (not an update that needs to run from the servicemenu,  just put the files in the right directories).

After that you should just need nbajamte.zip and nbajamte2a.zip in 279

Oh.  My bad...  Well done on finding a bug in software you weren't even using, lol.

I'll check out 3 later.  May be a case of the old emulators doing something weird, not sure.  Could be similar to the stuff I just did for the current software.

Is it possible to upgrade to a newer apricade version with other mame emulators on my pi 3b or is buying a newer one the only option?

Newer ARpiCADE versions are for newer RPis.  Latest MAME versions are unlikely to run many games well on Pi3.

From a quick bit of research the nbajamte2a.zip version I was trying on the newer ARpiCADE version was first supported by MAME 0.255 (or about that version).  Rev 2.1, nbajamte2.zip should be supported from about 147 - your best bet on Pi3 is likely MAME 0.172.

Sheesh got nba jam te 2.0 to work on mame 0.78.   I think i was using the wrong rom versions for the mame emulators that i have :(
You mentioned that earlier but i never double checked!

Next question - I want to enable cheats.    I found a file on Pugsys cheat website but google says i need to add it in the same folder as mame.exe.   Is there any easy way for me to access that folder on a windows computer?

"Obtain a Compatible cheat.dat
You need a cheat.dat file that works with MAME 0.78. Search for "Pugsy's MAME Cheats" or check MAME forums for early 2000s era cheat files.
Place the cheat.dat file into the same directory as your mame.exe. "

For 0.78 there isn't a mame.exe as it's a RetroArch core, lr-MAME2003plus.  I'm pretty sure it's possible anyway, likely you just add it to the MAME folder structure (I think it's /home/pi/.mame078 or maybe inside /home/pi/.config/retroarch/ somewhere).

AdvMAME (MAME106), MAME 0.172 and 0.203 are standalone MAME. see: /home/pi/.advance/ &  /home/pi/mame172/ &  /home/pi/mame203/

I believe you need the matching cheat.dat for whatever version of MAME you're adding it to (similar to the roms).  Sounds like you have this aspect covered already.

It's also possible cheats need to be enabled in MAMEs config file for whatever MAME version(s) you do.  I'm not sure of this though, I haven't tried MAME cheats before.

The only way I'm aware of to access the second partition of the SD card on Windows is using Paragon.  I don't regularly use Windows though so maybe there also other ways.  If you need to you can always put the files in the partition you can see and then move them to the right places on the Pi.

thank you for the reply.

I was able to move the cheat file over using Midnight Commander browser.
